KENRAY successfully completed a 14-month research and development project with PepsiCo, focused on the operational validation of paper-based packaging.
The project represents a significant milestone in the development of more sustainable packaging solutions, demonstrating the importance of collaboration, technical expertise and extensive testing in bringing alternative packaging materials into commercial production.
A Collaborative Approach to Sustainable Packaging
Led by KENRAY’s Research and Development (R&D) team, headed by Phill Loxley, with support from Ian Bonsall and Colin Bosworth, the project involved working closely with PepsiCo’s development team to undertake operational validation trials for paper packaging. Over the course of 14 months, both teams collaborated to address the technical challenges associated with introducing paper-based materials into existing packaging operations. The project combined KENRAY’s expertise in forming technology and packaging applications with PepsiCo’s commitment to developing more sustainable packaging solutions.
A Significant Industry Achievement
The successful completion of the trials supported PepsiCo in becoming the first FMCG company to introduce packaging containing over 90% paper content, carrying OPRL recycling labelling compliance.
This represents an important achievement for everyone involved and highlights the progress being made towards reducing reliance on conventional plastic packaging. For KENRAY, the project demonstrates how specialist engineering knowledge, research and development can help manufacturers adapt to changing packaging requirements while maintaining a focus on operational performance.
Recognising the Team Behind the Project
This achievement is the result of considerable dedication, collaboration and technical expertise over the 14-month development period. A special congratulations goes to Phill Loxley, Ian Bonsall and Colin Bosworth for their work throughout the project, alongside the wider KENRAY team who provided essential support behind the scenes. We would also like to thank PepsiCo’s development team for their close collaboration and commitment throughout the validation process.
Supporting the Future of Packaging
As the packaging industry continues to explore alternative materials, projects such as this demonstrate the important role that forming technology, technical expertise and collaboration play in supporting innovation.
KENRAY remains committed to working with manufacturers to explore new packaging materials, overcome technical challenges and develop forming solutions that meet evolving production requirements.
